UC Merced Sustainability Research and Engineering Building

Higher Education, Labs and Biotech

The Sustainability Research and Engineering Building is one of three teaching and research buildings that will anchor the new Academic Quad. The 155,000 gross-square-foot building consists of four floors above grade with a partial basement. Within the building are 25 wet labs, 31 dry labs, 11 class labs. The labsare organized around modular planning principles that will enable the configuration of the building to evolve over time. At the intersection between research and class laboratories, building users will find conference rooms, break rooms, machine shop, collaborative maker space, a chemical stock room, and office spaces for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and faculty member.. Primary exterior building materials consist of cast-in-place architectural concrete, corrugated metal, and high-performance glazing. Colored cement plaster is used as a highlight in select locations at the ground floor and exterior stairs.
