California College of the Arts

The California College of the Arts (CCA) expanded its San Francisco campus with an 82,305-square-foot addition designed by Studio Gang, completed in 2024. This new facility enhances the existing academic building, creating a vibrant environment that fosters interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.
The ground floor features open, flexible workshops designed for hands-on art-making practices. These spaces are organized around shared materials and equipment to encourage collaboration across disciplines. Above, two mass timber pavilions house classrooms, art studios, and exhibition galleries, which open onto a green terraced landscape, seamlessly connecting the building’s levels.
The project prioritized sustainability, targeting carbon neutrality and net-zero energy through innovative strategies such as self-shading façades and night-flush ventilation. Precise interior and exterior finishes were executed to align with the architectural vision, emphasizing functionality, aesthetics, and environmental goals.
This expansion not only strengthens CCA’s campus but also deepens its connections with San Francisco’s design and innovation district, contributing to the creative ecosystem of the Bay Area.
